Nyalas have that shaggy sheen about them thatās hard not to love. Plus, ānyalaā is just fun to say. Before we get sidetracked on all the fun ways you can say nyala, let me explain some of the neat things about them.
Their shaggy look isnāt just for aesthetics and actually serves a practical purpose. For males, it helps fill them out and make them look bigger. This is useful for intimidating other males, as they are quite territorial. Weāve never been afraid of someone with giant hair, but depending on how big it is, it could be intimidating.
Their coat also helps protect them from thorny underbrush, since they live in woodland areas. On top of that, the shaggy coat helps them blend in better with their surroundings, making it harder for predators to spot them.
Despite their standout appearance, nyalas are actually pretty shy animals and prefer dense bush or woodland where they can stay hidden. When something does stumble upon them, they are great at freezing in place and relying on their camouflage instead of immediately running. When that fails, or when they are startled, they can make a sharp barking call to alert others nearby, which is very considerate.
